Debian 8 Jessie has been released recently which brings more features and updates. In this tutorial, we will see how to upgrade Debian 7 Wheezy to Debian 8 Jessie.

Before doing anything, make sure you back up your data and any sensitive information to an external drive.

Let's first update the system packages using these commands:

su -
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Now edit this file:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Replace all "wheezy" with "jessie" and save the file:

After saving and closing the file, run these commands again:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

It's time now to upgrade to Debian 8 Jessie. Make sure you have already backed up your data and any sensitive information, then run this command:

apt-get dist-upgrade

Once the upgrade is complete, reboot your system so that all changes take effect. You can then check current Debian version using this command:

lsb_release -a

If the upgrade is sucessful, you yill get this output:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (jessie)
